The Ponce Servicios project was initiated as a part of the City’s plan to revitalize the downtown area...

The Project

Dating from the 17th century, the City of Ponce serves as the governmental seat of the Ponce municipality, as well as a hub for various Government of Puerto Rico entities. The Ponce Servicios project was initiated as a part of the City’s plan to revitalize the downtown area and to create a new government center consolidating all municipal agencies in a single building. Today, the 80,000-square-foot (7432m2) building – constructed in 1981 and known as Juan Bigas Plaza del Mercado – is home to the city’s planning, permits, housing and banking departments. Thorough restoration and a thoughtful selection of furniture, materials and finishes provide a well-designed place for citizens to access municipal services.

THE Challenge

The design team worked together to develop a comprehensive understanding of the client and its goals in support of municipal activities and programs. Programming and planning had to address the needs of 10 municipal agencies, each staffed by workers who perform diverse job functions and types of tasks. Additionally, the client mandated that no more than two primary product lines be specified. Furniture must furnish private offices, individual workstations and group workspaces – and be able to readily adapt as changes in personnel or workflow arise.

“The architect and the client shared the desire for furniture that could adapt and meet new needs, whatever those needs might be,” notes Ana Morales, Director of Sales and Design, Integrated Design Solutions. “The architect, Abel Misla, worked closely with us to define and fulfill the client’s criteria. It was a collaborative process that has produced a very flexible workplace with a fresh, light and modern look.”

The Response

Following guidelines set by the client, Teknion and its dealer, Integrated Design Solutions, delivered the high-quality workplace – at a manageable cost. The diverse Teknion product line was used to create 600 workstations and private offices.

The clean, crisp aesthetic of the Leverage panel system caught the attention of the client and project architect who wanted furniture that would integrate with the modern character of the building architecture. Equally, the visual simplicity of Leverage, in conjunction with a serene color palette, creates a work setting that evokes clarity and calm. Low-height panels, together with open plan layouts and a generous use of interior glass walls, contribute further to a contemporary look aligned with the client’s vision.

“The interior color scheme echoes that of the building facade,” adds Morales. “Teknion’s Storm White predominates, with Ebony and Parakeet applied as accents appropriate to the architecture and the regional context. The look is consistently polished and sleek across the office.”

Leverage also played into the client’s desire to make optimal use of space and inventory – and provide an excellent return on investment. Versatile, adaptable furniture was essential in order to allow for a wide range of planning options to support the varied tasks of government personnel at present and to allow for future reconfiguration using the inventory in place.

Leverage workstations, defined by low-height panels and panel-mounted screens, maintain a sense of openness and accessibility, while providing a degree of visual privacy for administrative and support personnel. Ample storage is supplied both above and below the worksurface.

In private offices, Leverage worksurfaces, credenzas and storage cabinets are combined and configured to address spatial constraints and individual needs. The Fitz work chair was selected for virtually all individual and group workspaces. As it is a nearly perfect fit for all. Teknion dna was selected for open lounge areas to create comfortable, casual seating for workers and visitors.

The client, architect, dealer and Teknion composed an attractive work setting designed around simple, classic elements tailored to different department and individual needs. The new space allows the city to consolidate its operations in a coherent and navigable environment.
